Evergrey - Monster Stage (4/5)
Having never seen Evergrey live before, despite owning lots of their records and liking the band very much, this was a gig I was really looking forward to. Especially as their latest album, Glorious Burden, is one of the best albums they have done, if not the best.
The band had made some line up changes since the last tour and have now added Johan Niemann (ex Therion) on bass and Marcus Jidell (ex Royal Hunt) on guitar and it didn’t take long to see that they fitted perfectly into the band. Jidell is a total ace on guitar and must be one of Sweden’s finest. He has a bluesier kind of feel to his playing that is a bit of a contrast to Evergrey’s dark and sometimes depressing metal, but it works splendidly.
The guys were playing in daylight which, on paper seems a bit wrong when you consider the band’s dark and moody music, but speaking of contrast, the guys were all smiles and seemed like they were loving every minute of the concert, and so was the small but enthusiastic audience who gave the boys a great response.
Me, I enjoyed myself very much and made me regret that I missed their gig at Sweden Rock earlier this year. I really would love to see them again, but this time on their own, at a smaller indoor venue.
