Accept - Monster Stage (5/5)
This was one concert I was looking forward to most at the whole festival. First, I missed them at Sweden Rock earlier this year due to other commitments (beer and Jaeger…). Second, this would be the first time I’d get to see Accept with their new singer Mark Tornillo (ex TT Quick).
I had already played their latest CD Blood Of The Nations to death, a great album and Tornillo sounds great and very convincing as the replacement for Udo Dirkschneider. But live is a whole other situation. Udo was an original both soundwise and visually and replacing him is not the easiest thing in the world. Just ask David Reece who tried years back.
They opened up with ”Teutonic Terror” from the new album and it was clear from get go that they would take no prisoners. The sound was loud but very clear and the big crowd more or less exploded right then and there. Tornillo showed us that there was no doubt that he was the real deal. He’s a tiny guy and is a mix between Udo and Brian Johnson (AC/DC).
The band mixed stuff off their new CD with classiscs like ”Breaker”,”Metal Heart”, ”Aiming High”, ”Princess Of The Dawn” and of course ”Balls To The Wall”. Tornillo passed the test with their early songs without any difficulties and I must say we didn’t miss Udo at all.
That’s one thing I though I’d NEVER say! The band were really tight and Peter Baltes (bass) and Wolf Hoffmann (lead guitar) must be the most smiling metalheads I have ever seen. If they hadn’t had ears, their smiles would have cut their heads in half, so there was no doubt that the guys just loved to be out on the road
again. On the downside, they had only an hour worth of time to play so there was a bunch of songs they didn’t play for that obvious reason.
Accept are really back for real and I hope I get the chance to see them again when the shows are their own.
