HISTORY

The Reading Festival originates from the National Jazz Festival, which was conceived by Harold Pendleton (founder of the Marquee Club in London) and was first held at Richmond Athletic Ground in 1961. This festival, in turn, took inspiration from events held in America. Throughout its first decade the festival changed names and moved around sites several times, being held at Windsor Racecourse, Kempton Park and Plumpton, before reaching its permanent home at Reading in 1971

The late 80s and early 90s saw yet more changes in the contemporary music scene with indie sounds and dance cross-over acts becoming ever more popular. Reading Festival did what it always does - it changed and adapted and in 1988 Mean Fiddler came on board, with that the future of the festival was assured.

Reading got itself a 'little baby' in 1999 with Leeds becoming the Northern half and both festivals taking place simultaneously.

GETTING TO READING & LEEDS FESTIVALS

READING FESTIVAL - the address is Richfield Avenue, Reading.

Do not attempt to drop off or pick up anywhere near Richfield Avenue. Follow the AA road signs to the pick up/drop off point. Once at Hills Meadow you should follow the signs to the boats and get the free shuttle boat service to the site.

Private hire drop off/pick up is now on Cremyll Road, off Tessa Road.

Hackney Carriages/black cabs drop pff/pick up - is in Tessa Road

Parents/friend drop off/pick up is at Hills Meadow.

Garrard Street NCP car park, opposite Reading Train Station, is available for weekend parking (price tbc) You can then use the shuttle bus that leaves from outside the train station.

If at all possible please travel by public transport or arrange a lift share. People arriving by public transport get quicker and immediate access to the campsites as the car parks are not immediately adjacent to the main site

READING BY CAR
Please note that our car parks are on grass fields, some with metal trackway approach roads and some parts have unmade road approaches that may not be suitable for all car suspensions. If you have any doubts about bring a very precious car then maybe re think your plans.

Car parking is limited and will be in nearby fields and a park and a free shuttle boat service will run between the Green car park and the festival site. There is a pedestrian bridge that will easily get you from the white car park to the main site.

Only cars arriving at the car parks with an official car-parking pass will be allowed to park in the official festival car parks.

We are assigning ticket holders the best car park for your journey and are thereby working to cut traffic going through Reading town centre, Caversham, and down Richfield Avenue to the event itself.

GETTING TO LEEDS FESTIVAL

All routes to Leeds Festival start via the A1 or M1. There is no access to Leeds Festival from any other route, so please travel to the A1, M1 or A1 (M) whether you are coming from the south or the north, east or the west and then follow the signs from the motorway.

Please note that the junction numbers on the A1 (M) that we are using changed only a year ago and some online / printed maps, and sat nav systems may not yet reflect the correct junction numbering on the ground, so please follow the signage on the routes rather than check against a map. If you ignore the signage or the routes, by checking on a map, or using your sat nav, you will not be able to get to site. Not only will these routes not lead you to the festival gates, but they may well lead you to a road block. You won’t save any time at all and you will also threaten the success of the plan as a whole.

Please travel at a safe but reasonable speed once on our routes. If every car dawdles for one minute more than is necessary, it would take us nearly a fortnight to get you all in. The volume of cars attending Leeds Festival mean that the success of the plan relies on each of you helping us so please please follow the signs from the motorway, do not stop on the access roads, park as directed and most of all travel to the festival safely. The access roads have temporary “no stopping” traffic orders on them and the police will be enforcing this. Remember to use the loo before you get near the site, and please respect the environment and don’t drop litter on your way to and from the festival.

There is absolutely no access to Leeds Festival whatsoever from the A64 travelling eastbound out of Leeds and you will meet a road block. There is no access to Leeds Festival from Junction 46 of the M1 or from the ring road.

All routes to Leeds Festival are from the A1 (M). Travel to the A1 or M1 and follow the signage.
