HISTORY

Provinssirock is the largest international rock festival in Finland. It was being held in the Törnävä Festival Park for the 31st time from June 12th to June 14th 2009. The organisation behind Provinssirock is Seinäjoki Live Music Association, Selmu ry, founded in 1992 to continue the work of Kemu ry. Kemu ry is the original force behind the Festival.

During its existence since 1979, Provinssirock has gone through many changes and seen its share of economic ups and downs. The number of festival goers grew steadily from the first Festival until late 1980's, when the temporary drawbacks of the recession hit. When the Festival was still organised by Kemu ry, the Festival was the most successful between the years 1986 and 1988 - the two day event gained audience of 35,000 to 40,000. The Festival kept growing from the 1993 two day event (with an audience of 12,000) until an all time high in last summer 2008 three-day-event were sold out with an audience of 75,000 visitors!

The driving force behind Provinssirock's continuous success is the attraction of top artists from Finland and abroad, well organised events and the organising association's will to renew and develop the festival year after year.

The 2007 festival enjoyed a total crowd of 55,000. In 2008 Provinssirock was organized on 13-15 June, and was sold out with a total of 75,000 people watching world-famous bands and artists such as Foo Fighters, Linkin Park, Paramore, The Sounds, Billy Talent and Serj Tankian.
