CHESSINGTON ADVENTURES
Chessington Zoo was founded in 1931 in the grounds of a country mansion of considerable history. As far as can be traced, the original mansion was built in 1348, probably as a country house named Chessington Lodge. It is thought that it was used as a School for Officers in Archery, and a visit from Queen Elizabeth I resulted in an act being passed permitting the practice of archery in the grounds on Sundays.
